Reiki is a natural system of stress reduction, relaxation, and healing. Discovered in Japan by Mikao Usui during meditation, Reiki uses "life force energy" (also referred to as "Qi" or "Chi") to promote these positive benefits in the body.
One can practice Reiki in person through "laying on hands" or at a distance. Regardless of how it is performed, Reiki is safe and easy to use. When training to become a Reiki practitioner, one is "attuned" to the energy and the techniques necessary to use Reiki.
The initial level I training acquaints one to Reiki and enables them to use the energy on themselves and others in person. Level II extends the training to include distance work and other tools for using this energy. Level III, the final course, trains one as a Reiki Master and Teacher.

My Reiki Story
The past decade has brought tremendous shifts in the availability of techniques such as Reiki for the general public. Once reserved for those few with plenty of money to spend (to the tune of $10,000 for Reiki Master/Teacher training), Reiki is more widely available -- and increasingly more recognized for its benefits -- than ever before. Anyone can benefit from learning Reiki, and everyone who learns Reiki has a unique opportunity to "give back" by helping others...and the planet. It is my pleasure and privilege to offer Reiki courses in the Appalachian mountains.
My teaching activities don't stop with Reiki: I am also a full-time Spanish teacher and have also taught university-level courses. I have several published books, including a Reiki book for kids (Mikao's Journey).
In addition to my teaching and Reiki work, I am a certified aromatherapist, avid dowser, New Thought minister, and a certified metaphysical practitioner. (See a summary of my credentials here.) I am a vegetarian / all-around animal lover and love to travel, read, and write.

Just for today, I will live peacefully.
Just for today, I will let go of worry.
Just for today, I will be grateful.
Just for today, I will be kind to all beings.
Just for today, I will be honest.

My Reiki Lineage
I include my Reiki lineage here in part because it's tradition for a teacher to share their lineage with students. I also think it's kind of cool to trace my practice back through the various teachers that came before me...and back to Mikao Usui himself.
The question worth asking about Reiki lineages is: does it matter? In many respects, no it doesn't matter. My lineage doesn't make me any better than someone with a different lineage...and vice-versa. It doesn't matter how many "steps" are between me (or you) and Mikao Usui...for several reasons. Pamela Miles does a reasonable job explaining this further.
And so, in the spirit of tradition and fun...here is my Reiki lineage. As you can see, mine has a few more branches than many Reiki folks claim to have, which I think just adds to the cool factor. If you become a student of mine, this shows how you will trace yourself back to Mikao Usui.
A note of clarity: students of Reiki will easily have 3+ Reiki instructors upon reaching master-level. Typically (but not always) the Reiki Master who provides Reiki Master training/attunement is the one "listed" in one's lineage. I made the below lineage with this assumption in mind. I received Reiki training and attunements from four people. Jonna Rae Bartges provided Reiki I; Dave Scarbrough provided Reiki I; Scott Vaughn provided Reiki II and Master; Lisa Powers provided Reiki I, II, and Master.
